Adamson Associates is providing master plan coordination, design support, contract documents and site review services for this large-scale, mixed-used development designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli. Pre-Certified LEED Gold, Porta Nuova is sited on a 17.3 acre plot adjacent to the Garibaldi train station. Prior to the redevelopment, decaying industrial facilities marred the urban fabric, and railyards that had been long abandoned, severed the site. The carefully developed master plan comprises several buildings, including residential, office, and retail components, and effectively re-knits the cityscape, creating a vibrant urban core which will be, to a large extent, a car-free zone, with a strong focus on humane pedestrian activity at the base of the buildings.
Most importantly, a new public space — the Piazza Circolare — will be created, bridging roads and metro lines. The key infrastructures will be underground, guaranteeing efficiency of the transit system and respecting the pedestrian-oriented character of the area. A single pedestrian precinct allows people to move between neighbourhoods, on foot or by bike lanes, without ever having to cross traffic. The “Giardini di Porta Nuova” is linked to Isola’s neighbourhood park, the circular piazza and Garibaldi pedestrian precinct, the bridges and main Varesine gardens. Particular attention has been paid to the lighting and urban furnishings — elements that are key for security and aesthetic considerations.
The buildings incorporate the latest energy saving solutions and sustainable materials so as to introduce a model of innovation to be taken up and shared across the entire spectrum of Italian urban development.
