Designed and delivered alongside Google’s nearby Bay View campus, this mixed-use complex shares many similarities with its sister site, including the canopy roof clad in custom-developed “dragonscale” photovoltaic panels.
Packed with sustainable features, Gradient Canopy is one of the largest buildings to earn the International Living Future Institute Living Building Challenge Materials Petal Certification – an achievement that required rigorous vetting of all materials. The project prominently features timber, including CLT panels that clad the building’s structural system, and FSC-certified products were sourced for 99% of the wood used within the building or temporarily for construction. Recycling and salvage initiatives incorporated into the building process diverted about 90% of construction waste from landfill.
More than just a healthy office, the project combines flexible workspace and public areas. The Google Visitor Experience makes a community destination of the site, bringing together an event space, a café, and a Google Store that are open to all. A Pop-Up Shop and outdoor plaza provide a new platform for local artists and businesses, while native landscaping, walking trails, and bike paths each do their part to support health and well-being.
